When media mogul Willie Fernandez ’69 shoots a 115 or playboy-extraordinaire Ernest Salazar ‘82 shoots a 119, we’ve got to wonder what went wrong with their golf swings. When 34 of 37 brods in an Upsilonians na Pumapalo tournament shoot over a hundred and the overall champion scores a net 78, we’ve got to ask what going on!!?
Last Friday was another day set aside for Upsilon.
Thirty seven golfing warriors started the day right by getting up in the wee
hours of the morning to prepare for the monthly pumapalo golf tournament.
Then we were to proceed to the Century Park Sheraton until the wee hours
of the next morning for the testimonials set for Sen. Joker ’48 and the rest
of the winning brods in the recent elections.
The golf tournament was sponsored by Batch ’81 and was held in honor of our late brod, Cochise Bernabe ’81. The planning was headed by Rae Manaloto ’81 and Thad Liamzon ’81. Other co-batches who helped out were Vladi Platon and Bong Uichangco.
After the early morning trek to the Remulla
household, also referred to as the province of Cavite, the usual suspects
converged at the Aoki clubhouse of the Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
We were glad to see some fresh faces such as World Bank strategist Rico
Alfiler ’69 (who flew in all the way from the Southeast USA to join
the 2001 Pumapalo Tour) and Sonny
Garcia ’65, who flew in from Davao as soon as he heard of the
open-bar that evening at the Sheraton. Also
showing up with pink-white skin was the long-lost Manolet
Ocampo ‘69, whose neck sprain caused by girl-watching, has
sidelined Manolet for almost two long years (from golf, not girl-watching).
A few holes after teeing off, brods were wondering why all tee-off markers were set at the Gold tee, thus adding at least 20 yards per hole. We all had our opinions but I still suspect that it was Rae Manaloto, the only brod aside from L.A. brods Rey Tibayan ‘61 and Jimmy Velasco ’70 who can drive 300 yards, who was responsible for this. What can we say about the 210 yard par-3 against the wind? And this wasn’t even the longest par-3! There was a 230 yarder which, by then, wasn’t worth remembering whether or not the wind was a factor. But that’s ok Brod Rae, basta libreng pagkain, ok lang.
To say the least, the Upsilonians na Pumapalo took a tumble, or shall we say a freefall. Only three brods showed their prowess by shooting below 100! No need to mention names since I was not one of them. Ok, ok, I’ll mention that Tong Puno ’65 shot relatively sparkling gross of 92. But since Tong’s handicap is a legitimate 13, his game was only good enough for 2nd place in the Class A division. Champions were:
Overall – Dr. Nanding Piedad ’52 - who had no complaints this time around! (He’s not wired to the internet, is he?)
Class A – No-Ne Rivera ’83 - tied with Doc Piedad but lost due to seniority
Class B – Charlie Gatmaitan ’83
Class C – Myki Cantero ’88 – after a long absence, its better the second time around.
Class D – Bert Pedrosa ’50 – you must have been as shocked as I was to win our divisions despite posting horrific scores. Don’t worry, I’m not posting them in this report.
Special mention should also be given to the Fighting
’69 batch – who showed up in full force: Rico
Alfiler, Boy Versoza, Willie Fernandez, Erdie Malveda, Manolet Ocampo &
Ceasar Guerzon. We’re
looking forward to your August 31
tournament in Wack Wack. Brods,
I suggest you start preparing since according to your kabatch Lito
Beriña, and I quote, “Hindi puwedeng kokonting premyo sa
tournament ng Batch ’69, mayabang kami, eh!”
Babes ’68 was part of this
conversation and can attest to this. That
P20 beer Lito was drinking may end up costing a few thousands more.
